The Isle of Man Government's Waste Plan, approved in 2000, identified a hierarchy for dealing with the island's waste - to minimise, recycle, and recover energy through energy-from-waste, minimising the amount of waste being sent to landfill and following European Best Practice.
To help achieve this, a contract was awarded to SITA Isle of Man to design, build, and operate an energy-from-waste (EfW) facility to divert waste from the island's landfill sites.
The facility was completed in 2004 and now processes all of the island’s 60,000 tonnes of domestic and commercial residual waste, producing 10 per cent of the island's electricity. Its state-of-the-art technology and onsite laboratory ensure the highest environmental and operational standards are maintained.

In this report we explain the role of the energy-from-waste (EfW) facility on the island and explain how the EfW process works, before examining our operations during the year. The report also provides information on our environmental performance and our responsibilities to our staff and the wider community.
